February brings us rhubarb and romance – what better combination to cheer up this miserable winter month!
It would of course be remiss of us based here in Wakefield to not mention rhubarb in February (see Food & Drink Events below). This lovely fruit is now in season and can be eaten in sweet and savoury dishes:
Rhubarb & Custard Tart – a different take on the classic rhubarb and custard combo
Rhubarb and Goat’s Cheese Salad – a fruity, tangy salad with lots of flavour that demonstrates rhubarb’s versatility
Rhubarb Vodka – yes, rhubarb booze! (The only downside to this recipe is that you can’t drink it for 3 months – sorry)
Rhubarb!: 21-23 February sees the return of the annual Wakefield Festival of Food, Drink & Rhubarb. The festival, which celebrates Wakefield’s heritage as part of the famous Rhubarb Triangle (the small area in West Yorkshire that produces Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb, which has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status) will incorporate market stalls, cooking demonstrations and tours of the forcing sheds to name just a few things. So established is the festival that it is regularly attracting some big names for the cooking demos. This year the line up includes Simon Rimmer, Ben Ebbrell and Sean Wilson. Should be excellent.
Beer and sweets!: Other local food and drink themed events to put in your diary for 2014 include the second Wakefield Festival of Beer in May and Pontefract Liquorice Festival in July.
